What are Portrait Drawing Sessions?
My first love in life has always been portraiture, and in particular, drawing portraits from life. There is something wonderfully vibrant about sitting down with another human, connecting with them and hearing their stories.
And while I listen to these stories, I draw. I draw and I observe, and I weave your stories into a portrait that feels deeply like you.
Everyone has a story, a journey. I want to hear yours.
How it works:
You come to my studio for a 2-3 hour informal private session with me. You bring any music you’d like to listen to on an iPod or smartphone, and I provide everything else – seating, lighting, speakers, water, tea/coffee.
Next, we decide if you’d prefer light blue or grey toned paper. Then we get you comfortable in my cozy portrait chair and pick a simple pose and figure out the lighting.
Then I set a timer for 20-25 minutes and I get to work while we chat and listen to your music (if you’d like). When the timer goes off, we’ll take a 5 minute break so you can get up, stretch your legs and peek at what I’m working on. We’ll repeat this process until the portrait is done or the 3 hours is up.
At the end of the session, you go home with a 8” x 10” drawing of yourself.
Why from life?
Photographs are frozen, dead things. While they’re useful and practical, there’s little joy in working from them.
There’s a magic and richness that comes from drawing from life. It’s a dynamic, intimate connection, full of good conversation and shared laughter and learning. Quite frankly, it’s just really fun for everyone.
(I sometimes hire models privately to create a painting and they enjoy themselves so much that they’ll often forget that I pay them.)

Giving Portraits as a Gift
This part is very flexible – you can:
- Get a portrait of yourself and give it to a loved one (ahem, parents and grandparents love this!)
- Get a gift certificate for a portrait and gift it to someone who can decide how they’d like to use it (a portrait of themselves, a loved one, and so on)
- Email me and ask for suggestions!
What if you don’t finish the portrait in 3 hours?
This is highly unlikely. But if for some reason I don’t finish, I’ll take some reference photos and finish it for you within the next 7 days and let you know when it’s ready to be picked up (or I can drop it off).
What should I wear?
Simple. Wear whatever makes you feel like you could take over the world. I don’t care if it’s a ballgown, a 3 piece suit, or your bathing suit. Wear whatever makes you feel like your best, brightest, most awesome self.
