A few days ago, I discussed being overwhelmed by the stuff going on this week. Now that things have been finalized, I feel like I’m able to discuss them a little more.
It seems that in 2 weeks, I’m moving. Yes, twice in six months. No, I’m pretty sure I’m not insane, but then the insane never think they’re nuts, do they?
Anyways. My financial situation has done a bit of a turnaround this week. Jesse started university, his employer cut his hours, and it looks like I’ll be the one paying the bills.
All I gotta say about that?
Woohoo!
No sarcasm there. Seriously. None at all. I’m actually excited to be paying all the bills myself. I am the breadwinner. Me – the girl everyone wrote off by the time she was 18. I’m supposed to be on disability right now. I’m not. I’m the one making the money. Who the hell saw that coming? (Okay, aside from everyone here who supports me. I know you guys saw it coming, because you’ve been telling me for months. I love you.)
I can’t afford to pay for the apartment we’re currently in by myself. At least, if I did, I wouldn’t have a lot of money left over for other things like, oh food. Clothes. As it is I’ve run out of contact lenses and can’t afford anymore. (Oh how I long for the day when I make enough money that the cost of Parmesan cheese doesn’t make my stomach flip. I’m getting there.
So moving was a necessity.
Apartment Hunting
We realized we needed to move Monday. I started making phone calls that afternoon. The first place we went to see was small minuscule. It was a third floor walk up and the staircase was maybe two feet wide, at the best. It was all delightfully sketchy and if we didn’t own things like an armoire or a bed, it would have been fine. Sort of. But I knew within 30 seconds that it just wasn’t happening.
Then we saw the second place. And fell in love.
Ten foot ceilings. Two fireplaces. Gigantic bay windows. Ornate crown molding. All in an a large, elegant house from the 1880s. It’s beautiful. It’s 3 times the size of the place we live in now, and I’m saving a whole ton of money per month. It’s got so much character, and so much space. I think we’ve got the parlour and the old dining room from when it was a one family home. I guess you could call it a manor house or something. Anyways, it’s pretty freaking huge.
And now it’s mine. I paid the damage deposit yesterday, beating out another couple by hours. (Ha!) And in 2 weeks, it’s mine, all mine.
Just wait till I post pictures! Its so beautiful!
Admittedly, there are some downsides, mainly the bathroom. It’s tiny. I mean, really, really tiny. And odd. One wall is entirely cupboards. I opened one drawer and it was a built-in cutting board – I was so baffled, I just closed it. (Methinks this used to be part of the original kitchen.) There is exactly 12 inches between the cupboards and the door of the shower (no bath sadly). You kinda have to squeeze your way in there. At first, I was kind of horrified. But now I think it just gives it character. And I’m sure I can spruce it up! Besides, there are so many drawers and cupboards in there, I could keep half my wardrobe in it.
And the kitchen doesn’t have tons of cupboard space. But then, I only own 4 pots, so who cares? And the landlord just bought it a brand new stove and full sized fridge. I’m happy!
But most of all, most importantly – I get studio space with a window again. The living room is so gigantic that the space right next to the huge bay window is now mine. Light! Real light! Oh frabjous day!
I’m so thrilled. I want to move in right this second. It feels like a home. My home. And I am going to adore it.
The only down side
Technically, we’re supposed to give 30 days notice on our current apartment. We couldn’t do that. So it looks like I’m going to have to pay rent on 2 apartments at once. Meaning, I need to pull an extra $650 out of thin air. If you’ve been meaning to buy a painting or order a commission, now would be a seriously awesome time to do that.
Or prints! I do offer prints, I just keep forgetting to get them up on the site (oops). $60 + $10 shipping for a gorgeous 8×10 signed print of any painting you want. My printer is top notch – he makes my prints look like original paintings.
Just tell me the title of the painting you want when you check out.
And if you don’t want to buy a print, but feel like helping out anyways, you can send a donation through PayPal to sarah@smlacyart.com.
You are all the bestest. It’s only cus you guys are so awesome that I feel comfortable asking for help in this way – which normally makes me want to throw up. Thank you for that.
