So yesterday I went to Jesse’s house for his birthday in the middle of a raging snowstorm. I had to actually walk into his neighbourhood from the main road because if my dad, who was crazy enough to drive me to the other side of town, decided to drive into the neighbourhood, he would have never gotten out. It was white out conditions, and pretty much sheer pandemonium.
This morning the snow has pretty much stopped, although its still gently falling now. Its pretty. (As long as I’m inside.)
There is one thing I do love about snow though – the silence. Everything is so muffled and quiet in the snow. (Until that bastard down the street breaks out his snow blower.)
I’ve been watching it snow because its almost meditative to watch. Its been dark though, cloudy and dull. As I was watching, the sun suddenly burst out from behind the clouds and bathed my snow-laden neighborhood in a rosy golden light. It was too beautiful to pass up and I charged outside with a camera. There was not a soul around, and the silence was perfect.
It was almost spiritual standing out there with the camera, just watching. You know that feeling when you enter a large cathedral or church, and everything is so still and quiet? It felt like that. Regal, dignified, divine. I had ten minutes of peace to snap shot after shot, trying desperately to capture the glow. The photos don’t even do it justice.
When a car came tearing down the street, the spell was broken. I trudged back inside, frozen but peaceful. As I stepped back in the house, the sun disappeared and the clouds have covered everything in a depressing gray blanket again.
Sometimes you just get lucky.
Here are some of the best shots.
We’re supposed to be getting more tonight. And on Wednesday. This year is going to be a very white Christmas indeed.
Welcome to one artist's odyssey
On May 21st, I'm going on a quest. A quest for art, for meaning, for beauty, for truth. I'm picking up my life, packing up a suitcase and heading to rural France to live, paint and study art for the next 18 months.
