Yesterday, I finally made the time to sit down and really paint, for the first time since I moved to PEI.
Oh my god, it went so well.
I still can’t get over it. I played with the ink, and did some really interesting looking sketches of a couple nudes, and then I got stuck into the oils.
I love oils.
My painting totally looks like something I always dreamed about being good enough to paint. Don’t you love it when that happens? I love the softness, their warm, buttery quality. I love the way they blend, the gentleness it adds to my work.
Yummm.
But I love the inks too, though for different reasons. I love the edgy, loose quality they give to my sketches. The shadows are streaky, patchy, and I like it that way. The darks are black as…well, ink. They’re just a lot of fun to do, and you really get to just zone out while you do them – this is not a method that welcomes any control freak qualities. The ink has a mind of it’s own.
Again, I’m really feeling the sting of not having a camera. So, in the spirit of Havi and her very personal ads, I’m going to write a personal ad for a camera.
What I’d like
A digital SLR. A good one. Preferably Canon or Nikon, as those are both brands I trust. I’ll take a Sony if I absolutely have no choice, but Sony is a pain in the arse, because you have to buy all of their accessories as they’re not compatible with anything else. It doesn’t need to be a top of the line DSLR, just an entry level one. Not too many buttons either. I don’t do well with a plethora of buttons. In an ideal world, I’d be able to pick up a second hand Nikon D40, which is basically the perfect camera for me. I’d also like the money to show up for this purchase as well, because right now, that money is non-existent.
How This Could Happen
- I could find the camera on a used website, like Kijiji.ca
- It could go on sale at Future Shop
- Someone could hear about me needing one, have one and sell it to me
- Some other magical way. I’m open to it just finding me.
- I could sell a painting, or get a commission
- I could win the lottery (kidding)
- I could get a new web design client
- I could take on extra hours at work, and save up for it
- Again, a magical solution wherein the money just shows up. That’s cool too.
My Commitment
I promise to use this camera for all manner of wonderful and creative things. I will use it to help share my art with the world and it will be the most well taken care of camera ever. It will be loved and cherished and will have a long, creative, wacky, fulfilling life. Scout’s honour.
And while I’m asking…
Man, I could really go for a chair in the studio. Right now we’re moving the desk chair back and forth. But it also means that someone can’t use the desk and be in the studio at the same time. Kind of annoying. I’d really just love a cheap, old rolling desk chair, fairly well padded and not smelling of smoke. It can be absolutely hideous and older than dirt, but as long as it’s pretty cushy and rolls, I’m happy. Oh and, not more than $10.
If these two things could just find their way to me, I’d be thrilled.
Got any ideas for me finding stuff? Lemme know in the comments!
And this just deserves a second yay
Really, the art is going so well. I’m so excited about it. I can’t wait to get back in the studio. I can’t wait to show you guys! It’s all just so exciting! I couldn’t sleep last night I was so happy about it.
Happy sigh. Yay.

Do you have a freecycle forum like thingy near you? Just thinking someone may have chair on there.
I have my old olympus SLR camera looking for a good home. it’s film though and the lens is fixed. That being said, it takes fantastic pictures and you could get them onto CD.
Totally up to you, but it could be a stand in for the mean time? xx

Yes! Super helpful
I am definitely going to check that out.
As for the Olympus SLR, I *will* think about it. It might do as a stand in, like you said. I think the nice thing about digital though, for photographing artwork, is it’s sooo much easier to see if you’ve got it square/lighting right. With film, you kinda have to pray to the camera gods, sacrifice a goat and hope for the best
I know exactly what you mean! Especially about sacrificing goats. So there is absolutely no pressure to accept.
Sacrificing goats is messy and rather prehistoric after all.
But, the offer is there should you desire. Until then my camera will go on living under our stairs taking pictures of spiders.

Great to hear you’ve got your painting mojo back – enjoy it!
Now, what do you need to remember for the next time you pile on that pressure on yourself?!
