I’m looking for a model from the indigenous community who would be interested in collaborating on a portrait with me.
As we all know, 2017 is Canada’s “150th” anniversary (yes, those are air quotes). Lots of stuff is happening because of this.
This coincides with Canada’s Kingston Prize for Portraiture, our national portrait competition.
The Kingston Prize is meant to represent the faces of Canada. But when I participated in the 2015 exhibition, it was a loooooooooot of white people. A lot. Like, 28 out of 30 portraits were of white folks.
Since we’re all kicking up a fuss about Canada’s 150th, I’m feeling subversive and would like to make sure that there is at least some kind of indigenous representation submitted to the show. I can’t guarantee that I’ll get in again but I want to try.
Collaboration, you say?
Yes. Because I want whoever I work with to tell me how they’d like to be represented.
Who are you? How do you want the world to see you? Not as a representative of your entire community (because how insane would that be?), but of you, as an individual, who also happens to belong to a community that wildly deserves recognition as part of the faces that make up Canada.
I’m interested in who you are.
But I’m too fat/thin/old/young/ugly/whatever-else
I really, really, really don’t care. This is open to whatever age, size, shape, or degree-of-conventional-beauty you happen to be.
What do I care about?
That you are punctual and reliable and you’ll be here when you say you’ll be here. My work is totally dependent on you – without you, there’s no art, there’s no inspiration, there’s nothing. That’s really all that matters to me.
I’ve had such a response – thank you!! I’ve closed applications because I need to get started as soon as I can and already have an amazing pool of applicants to pull from.
However! If you’re still interested in working on something like this with me in the future, please still send me an email. I’d love to hear from you, and work with you on future projects similar to this. Working on projects like this is important to me, regardless of fancy competition deadlines.
I teach, so my schedule can be a little limiting. I need you to be available either during the day, Monday to Friday, or available Monday, Tuesday or Friday evenings, and possibly the occasional weekend.
How to Apply:
Send an email with a paragraph or two of why you’d love to work with me and a quick snapshot of your face (doesn’t have to be perfect, this is mostly so I can put names to faces and helps me connect with you more).
Note: I can’t believe I have to say this but based on previous experiences hiring models, I will say it – I am married. This is not an opportunity to try to date me. But you weren’t going to try that anyways, right? Right.
